Lake Ida in Delray Beach might just be Florida's best-kept secret for freshwater fishing, and Captain John Shanley knows every inch of these productive waters. This full day adventure puts you right in the heart of some seriously good bass fishing, where Peacock Bass, Largemouth Bass, and even exotic Clown Knife Fish are waiting to test your skills. You'll spend the day aboard a fully rigged Avid boat that comfortably handles up to 4 anglers, with all the gear, bait, and tackle included. Just grab your Florida freshwater license, pack some snacks and drinks, and get ready for non-stop action on one of South Florida's top urban fishing destinations.
Captain John runs a relaxed but productive operation that welcomes everyone from first-timers to seasoned bass pros. Your day starts with a quick rundown of the game plan and safety basics before heading out to his proven honey holes around Lake Ida. The beauty of this fishery is its variety - you're not just targeting one species, but a whole mix of hard-fighting exotics that call these waters home. The Avid boat is set up perfectly for lake fishing with plenty of casting room and all the electronics needed to stay on the fish. John provides live bait, which gives you a serious edge over other charters that charge extra for it. He's got a keen eye for reading the water and isn't afraid to move spots when the action slows down, keeping you in the strike zone all day long.
Lake Ida fishing is all about presenting the right bait in the right places, and Captain John has dialed in the techniques that work best here. He'll have you working everything from live shiners for the bass to specialized rigs that drive the Peacock Bass absolutely wild. The lake's structure includes seawalls, docks, and submerged cover that hold fish year-round, and John knows exactly how to work each spot for maximum results. You'll learn proper casting techniques for tight quarters, how to work baits around structure without getting hung up, and the subtle differences in fighting each species. The gear is all top-notch and perfectly matched to the fishing - medium to heavy action rods with smooth drags that can handle the powerful runs these exotics are famous for.
"John was a very good guide caught a ton of fish and a wide variety! I would recommend him to anyone and will use him every single time we come to town and fish!" - Ian. "John was great, very knowledgeable, easy going, and helpful with fishing tips. We booked the 6hr trip and couldn't be happier, the time flew by. I honestly lost count of how many fish we caught all together. I believe 35+ Peacock Bass, 2 big Mayan Cichilds, some Largemouth bass, unfortunately missed 2 Clown Knife Fish, but now we have a reason to come back again next year." - Jamie. "My 9-year-old daughter and I had an awesome time on our fishing charter in South Florida! We're from Chicago and have only fished small lakes in Wisconsin and ponds around home, so this was a totally new experience for us. Even the smallest fish we caught were way bigger than anything we've ever caught before—it was so exciting!" - Nancy.
Largemouth Bass are the classic freshwater gamefish that made Florida famous, and Lake Ida's population is healthy and aggressive. These bass typically run 2-6 pounds with some real giants mixed in, and they're most active during the cooler parts of the day. They love ambushing prey from cover, so expect heart-stopping strikes when your bait gets close to docks or vegetation. The fight is classic bass - powerful runs, head shakes, and aerial displays that never get old. Spring and fall are prime times, but Captain John knows how to find them year-round by adjusting techniques and locations based on water temperature and weather patterns.
Peacock Bass are the real stars of this show, and these South American imports have found paradise in South Florida's warm waters. These colorful fighters are incredibly aggressive and will absolutely crush a properly presented bait. They typically range from 2-8 pounds, with their distinctive three-spot pattern and brilliant colors making them a favorite for photos. Peacocks are ambush predators that love structure and shade, often holding tight to seawalls and docks where Captain John excels at presenting baits. Their fights are legendary - powerful, fast, and relentless. They're most active in warmer months but can be caught year-round, with the best action often coming during stable weather patterns when they're actively feeding.
Lake Ida delivers the kind of freshwater fishing experience that keeps anglers coming back year after year, and Captain John's local knowledge and professional approach make it accessible to everyone. Whether you're looking to introduce kids to fishing, challenge yourself against exotic species, or just enjoy a day on the water catching fish consistently, this trip checks all the boxes. The full day format gives you plenty of time to learn the techniques, enjoy different spots around the lake, and really get into a rhythm with these amazing fish. With flexible morning and afternoon departures available daily, and everything included except your license and refreshments, it's easy to fit this world-class fishing into your schedule. Don't miss your chance to experience what serious bass anglers are calling one of Florida's most productive and fun freshwater fisheries.

John was great, very knowledgeable, easy going, and helpful with fishing tips. We booked the 6hr trip and couldn’t be happier, the time flew by. I honestly lost count of how many fish we caught all together. I believe 35+ Peacock Bass, 2 big Mayan Cichilds, some Largemouth bass, unfortunately missed 2 Clown Knife Fish, but now we have a reason to come back again next year. He also provides the live bait that is extra on other charters. Again, if you’re wanting to be put on the Peacocks look no further. We had a great time!! Look forward to doing it again next year.

My 9-year-old daughter and I had an awesome time on our fishing charter in South Florida! We’re from Chicago and have only fished small lakes in Wisconsin and ponds around home, so this was a totally new experience for us. Even the smallest fish we caught were way bigger than anything we’ve ever caught before—it was so exciting! Captain John made everything super easy and fun. He was really helpful, showing us what to do and answering all our questions, but he also handled all the dirty work—baiting the hooks and unhooking the fish. He knew exactly where to go, and we caught plenty of fish during our 2-hour trip. It was such a great experience for both of us. If you’re looking for a fun, stress-free fishing trip, definitely book with Captain John!

We had an amazing experience with Capt. John. He was waiting for us at the dock when we arrived and 100% prepared for the day. He took us to various areas and stayed there as long as it was producing fish for us. He knew exactly where to take us because we caught fish at each and every spot he stopped at. He's a very relaxed and easy-going guide and was easy to hold a conversation with. We caught a variety of fish and honestly couldn't have asked for a better day. We would've not had the success we had with any other guide. We feel as though he tailored the day for us. Thank you so much, Capt. John for the great memories.

John was an amazing captain! He kept us on the fish, and when they became slightly uncooperative, we moved spots quickly to get right back in them. Will definitely book again!!!

fantastic 2 hour trip! Caught around 18 Peacock Bass! and a few other species. Captain John has access to private waters that other captains just don't have. Skinny waters with the Pea's hanging by the sea wall in private area that he knows well. Don't waste time and money with other charters. This guy will put you on fish!

Review for Captain John – Lake Ida Charter Captain John was awesome! Very personable and easy to get along with. He didn’t waste time sticking with what wasn’t working—he made quick adjustments to ensure we had the best possible shot at catching fish, even in tough conditions. His knowledge of Lake Ida really showed; he knows that water like the back of his hand. Thanks to his expertise, I was able to catch Peacock Bass, Clown Knifefish, Hybrid Stripers, and Largemouth Bass—all in one trip. As someone who spends a lot of time fishing, I can honestly say this was one of the most cost-effective trips I’ve ever taken. If you're looking to maximize your time on the water and actually catch fish, trust Captain John's judgment. He’ll make your trip a great one. Thanks again for a fantastic experience!

My friend and I went on a 4 hour charter, and we caught fish the whole time. We had our first fish in the boat 5 minutes after we arrived at our first spot. Between the two of us, we caught about 30 fish, mostly exotics, and several Large Mouth Bass. The three words I'd use to best describe our experience with Cpt. John would be Professional, Knowledgeable, and Productive. Thank you Jurassic Park Charters for the great, lifelong memories. Oh yeah, he took some really good photos of our catches for us, and sent them directly to our phones.

These green fighters average 12-24 inches and put up a solid fight when hooked. That oversized mouth opens well past their eyes, helping them ambush prey around cover like fallen trees, grass beds, and dock pilings in Lake Ida's shallow areas. They're most active during cooler morning and evening hours, especially in spring and fall when water temps hit that sweet spot. What makes them popular is their willingness to hit topwater lures and the way they jump when hooked. Here in Delray, I've found they can't resist a slow-rolled spinnerbait along the vegetation edges - the flash and vibration triggers aggressive strikes from bigger bass holding tight to cover.

These colorful South American natives aren't true bass but fight twice as hard. Running 12-14 inches on average, they're aggressive daytime hunters with that distinctive black eyespot on their tail. You'll find them around structure - bridges, fallen trees, rocky areas - in warmer sections of our canal system. Peak action happens March through June when they're spawning and again September to December. What guests love is their attitude - they hit lures hard and never give up easy. Skip the plastic worms though, they won't touch them. My go-to trick is live golden shiners fished near bridge pilings during midday heat when other fish shut down but peacocks stay active.
